Why visit St. James & Montego Bay?
|
|
Montego Bay, Jamaica’s second city, is the
country’s most famous tourist destination. Its lovely aquamarine bay is complete with white sand beaches (link to beaches and water sports)
and stunning ten square-mile coral formations (link below to
our blurb on the Montego Bay Marine Park).
Boats (link to beaches and water sports) of all sizes ply the
waters, including stately cruise ships, sleek sailing yachts,
fishing boats and other craft.
All sorts of water sports (link to beaches and water sports) are available, including snorkeling,
scuba-diving, swimming, sailing, deep-sea fishing and of course a
sunset cruise or glass-bottom boat tour.
The town centre is a lively place, featuring an historic
cobblestone square and Georgian heritage buildings mixed with
colourful Caribbean architecture.
Although Montego Bay is indeed lovely, visitors
should not miss the gorgeous scenery of St. James’ (link to St.
James tourism section) mountainous terrain.
The undulating hills make for incredible views, lending
themselves to exciting horseback riding and other adventure tours.
Come and explore our stately great houses, plantation estates, world-class golf, bird sanctuary, Blue Hole Nature Park,
and even the wild Cockpit Country.
Montego Bay and St. James has the greatest
concentration of tourist accommodation on the island and offers a
wide variety from luxury all-inclusive resorts, large multi-stories and apartment hotels to small inns and quaint villas.
Be sure to contact the Jamaica Tourist Board
to find your dream Jamaican hideaway.
With the glistening bay waters as a backdrop,
Montego Bay offers some of the most scenic dining on the island. International cuisine is available including Japanese, Indian, American and Cuban, at prices from moderate to luxurious.
Several restaurants are located along the Gloucester Road ‘Hip
Strip,’ or you can sample the local cuisine
in the centre of town.
Don’t miss the many roadside fruit sellers or food vendors
found all around the parish – their delicious jerk chicken, curry
goat or Jamaican patties are a unique culinary experience.
Montego Bay offers a wonderful array of shopping opportunities with a large
selection of duty-free facilities. Gift shops line the Hip Strip,
and the two craft markets are a great opportunity to support local
artisans and find keepsakes for a tangible memory of Jamaica!
Visitors flock to Montego Bay for its many
local and international events.
