HELP COMING FOR PERSONS IN ST. JAMES AFFECTED BY HURRICANE IVAN

A Welfare Committee being administered by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security is now taking steps to respond to individuals in St. James who are affected by Hurricane Ivan.

Teams have been dispatched from the Ministry's Western Office, St. James Poor Relief Department at the St. James Parish Council and Social Development Commission to carry out an assessment of the areas of need, in order that the necessary response can be forthcoming.

The Welfare Committee has twenty-one (21) days to complete its investigation. In the interim, food items and temporary shelters are being provided for affected persons.

At a Special Meeting of the St. James Parish Council on September 14, provisions were put in place to alleviate the suffering of the 158 persons who are still in emergency shelters across the parish. This is down from the 2834 persons who had sought refuge in 43 emergency shelters during Hurricane Ivan.

ROADS

Several main and parochial roads which were blocked by trees and downed power lines making them impassable have been cleared. Teams from the St. James Parish Council, National Works Agency, National Solid Waste Management Authority and the Fire Department cleared roads in downtown Montego Bay, on the outskirts of the City and in rural St. James.

FLOODING

Flooding was reported in Kirkpatrick (Sign), Lima, Barnett River (in the vicinity of Irwin), Catherine Hall, Chelsea, Bogue Main Road, Green Pond Main Road, Vaughnsfield.

LANDSLIDE

Landslides were reported in Amity Hall, Johns Hall through to Flamstead. Landslides in Tangle River caused the main road in that community to be completely cut-off from Flamstead Gardens. Sixty-nine (69) persons were affected by the Tangle River landslide, which destroyed 5 houses and the Baptist Church in the area.

There were no reports of deaths or major injuries to persons in the parish. Several homes and businesses lost their roof or were damaged by fallen trees. Minor infrastructural damage at some hotels in the tourist resort of Montego Bay was reported.
