The Montego Bay Junior

November 6, 2002
. This, after an
extremely challenging competition, involving ten (10) equally
intelligent students from eight (8) educational institutions in the
parish of St. James.
Deroi Brown, a third

Cornwall
College
, was selected Junior Mayor of the City of
Montego Bay
. Jodi Hylton, a fifth
form student from
Mount
Alvernia
High School
, was named Junior Deputy Mayor. Other members of the Executive Body
include Councillor Matthew O’Connor from
Cornwall
College
who serves as Secretary General and Councillor Topazia Brown from
the

The first official
Junior Council meeting was held on
Thursday, November 14, 2002
. At this meeting, a
permanent meeting date was scheduled for the first Monday of each
month at
3:30 p.m.
The Montego Bay Junior
Council planned to be financially independent in all its endeavours.
As a result a fund raising event, in the form of a ‘Grand
Bake Sale’ was held on
December 16, 2002
. Hotels and Bakeries in
Montego Bay
donated items towards the sale. This event was held during the
Municipal Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in
Sam Sharpe Square
. Our first fundraising
event was a success as over Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00.) was
realized in profits. This
money will go towards the establishment of the Youth Club; our major
project for the year. This
Youth Club aims to keep the minds of Montego Bays’ young people
active, by educating them about governance at the local level, and
keeping them culturally aware.
From start, the Council
has been very active. Junior
Councillors were apart of the Municipal Christmas Activities
Planning Committee, assisting with the Mayor’s Annual Christmas
Treat where over fifteen hundred (1500) children were fed, presented
with gifts and given the opportunity to frolick. We were also
actively involved in the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony.
The Montego Bay Junior
Council gives youths the opportunity to express themselves.
All our members have the right to object to any decision
being made and to question it. In
other words, we strive to be extremely democratic.
Come
March 19, 2003
the Council will televise it Special Meeting, where discussions will
be held from the perspective of us youths on issues affecting the
City of
Montego Bay
, and the parish of St. James as a whole. The Junior Council’s
major project for the year will also be officially launched.
The extremely work
oriented Montego Junior Council continues to strive for excellence
as we make Montego Bay a great City with a bright future.
Councillor Matthew O’Connor
, Secretary General
